If your urges to stay connected 24/7 bring you to hyperbolic declarations of powerlessness, you can now leave the hyperbole at the door. Results of a new study confirm what you’ve claimed for years: checking email and social media is more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol.

Even though a co-sponsors of SOPA and PIPA pulled their support for the bills on Wednesday, SOPA’s lead backer says he’s not backing down and “expects to move forward” with the bill next month.

Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the House Judiciary Committee chairman, told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that the bill has already accommodated objections by the opposition.“It’s easy to engage in fear-mongering and it’s easy to raise straw men and red herrings, but if they read the bill they will be reassured,” Smith told the WSJ.

Smith also dismissed charges that the bill amounts to censorship.

“Obviously there’s no censorship in the bill and no one can indicate any censorship whatsoever. It’s not censorship to want to stop illegal activity,” Smith told the publication. “That’s all we do. We’re trying to impede illegal activity by foreign websites.”

Smith was apparently unmoved by a widespread Internet blackout on Wednesday protesting SOPA. Meanwhile, PIPA remains scheduled for a vote in the Senate on Jan. 24.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg voiced his opinion about SOPA and PIPA for the first time Wednesday, calling the legislature “poorly-thought out laws that get in the way of the internet’s development.”

Zuckerberg’s opposition to the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) joins the ranks of various other tech leaders and companies, including Wikipedia and Tumblr, who have blacked out their sites Wednesday to protest the bills. (Facebook didn’t go that far.)

Clive Thompson on the Instagram Effect
When the mobile app Instagram emerged just over a year ago, I didn’t expect it to make a splash. Photo sharing is old hat (ask Flickr and Facebook), and social-media tools .. eh, they come and go. But Instagram didn’t go: It exploded, amassing 12 million users who’ve posted 250 million pictures. Not bad for an app built by six people. (more…)

The Designer Tech Series is supported by the exquisitely crafted, new 2013 Lincoln MKS with Lincoln Drive Control. Now it gets interesting.

The idea of surface computing — interacting with gestures, movements and objects, is quickly moving from the big screen (a la Minority Report) and into reality. From smartphones to tablets to thermostats, touch is becoming the computing input mechanism of choice.

With Surface 2.0, Microsoft is actively taking surface computing to the next level.

First released in 2008, the Microsoft Surface was a tabletop touch computer with support for multi-touch and multi-gestures. Additionally, the original Surface had built-in cameras that could capture objects placed atop the tabletop device and project elements of that object back to the user.

At CES 2011, Microsoft unveiled the Surface 2.0. Partnering with Samsung, the Surface 2.0 is cheaper, faster and thinner. Gone are the bulky cameras and the heavy DLP display. Instead, a 40″ 1080p screen is fitted with a sheet of Gorilla Glass. The device can sit on four legs. Because the new SUR40 is only 4″ thick, users can also mount the device on a wall for more standard kiosk-style interactions.

Last month, Samsung started accepting pre-orders for the Microsoft Surface 2.0 SUR40 in 23 countries. The list price in the United States is $8900 and stores, hospitals and restaurants could start receiving their devices by early 2012.

The world’s first virtual store has opened in Seoul, South Korea. It looks a lot like your average grocery store from afar, but upon further inspection you can see that there are no real items in the store – just life size images of them. In order to shop, customers must scan barcodes of products displayed using a special downloadable app.

The app allows customers to fill their bag with virtual goods, pay for them with a credit card, and will ensure your purchases get delivered to your home by day’s end. Pretty handy!

By now you guys should know that the government went haywire shutting a bunch of sites for copyright infringement. Is there more to come? Regardless to what side you are on it seems that the way things have gone on are no longer the norm and that Big Sis is on the hunt

.

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: “This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations.”
