UPDATE–The spokesperson for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Jerry Massie, says Justin Walker has been moved to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and placed in Administrative Segregation in the H-unit in McAlester. A cell phone was recovered along with some marijuana. Massie says DOC will be asking for charges to be filed in Greer County as well as proceeding with its own internal misconduct process. This happened less than 24 hours after FOX23 News reported Walker’s Facebook to DOC.

All good things must come to an end. And in the new issue of XXL, Dr. Dre says that Detox will be his last recording as an MC.

“As far as me going into the mic booth, that shit is over. I’m always going to talent scout and try to find new artists to work with. But, yeah, that’s it. I don’t see myself doing it the way I’m doing it now…”

Dr. Dre just may be delivering on his plans to deliver material from Detox before Christmas. The hip-hop icon will be going in front of the lens to shoot a new video before the end of the year.Director Joseph Kahn hinted on Twitter that he will be directing a video for Dre. “Prepping DR. DRE. Hey Interscope, do you think there will be any BEATS headphones in this video?” he tweeted.

The day before, he provided more evidence of what he had in store. “Just booked my next video. It’s big. Three guesses who. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.”

Kahn has recently helmed videos for Dre’s Interscope labelmates Eminem (“Love the Way You Lie”), Keri Hilson (“Pretty Girl Rock”), and Nicole Scherzinger (“Poison”).

When asked in September about Detox‘s status, Dre said that he was still recording the highly-anticipated project, but hoped to have something out in time for the holidays. “In a perfect world, you know I’m really trying to make Christmas, but we’ll see,” he stated. “Something will definitely be out.”

The album has been over a decade in the making. “I’m actually working on it every day,” added Dre. “I just have to make sure I don’t accomplish this word: anticippointment.”

R.I.P. Eyedea

October 17th, 2010

One of the Twin Cities most beloved musical talents has passed away. Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen, a longtime Rhymesayer, singer, lyricist and fixture in the indie hip-hop scene died early this morning, just a month shy of his 29th birthday.

Friends of Larsen said his mother, Kathy Averill, found him this morning.

“It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away,” she wrote on his personal Facebook page. “At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. On behalf of Mikey’s family, close friends and fans, thank you.”

Part of the Rhymesayers crew from its early days and a creative force to be reckoned with behind the mic, Eyedea painted beautiful and often abstract pictures with his lyrics, revealing the raw, serrated edges of emotion. He and his DJ, Abilities (a.k.a. Max Keltgen) were champions of their crafts and best friends since the age of 14.

A memorial fundraiser has been started here.

RIP and thanks for the craftmanship and dedication to an art form that gets recycled and sold at value prices day in and day out. Hip Hop and music in general lost an unheralded legend…….
